A pochade is a small, rapid oil sketch executed directly from life, a practice rooted in nineteenth-century French landscape tradition. Derived from the French word poche, meaning pocket, these paintings are exclusively created en plein air on durable, lightweight supports like card, wood panel, or thick paper. I use a pochade box, a compact, self-contained wooden paint box that opens to serve as both an easel and a palette while neatly storing wet panels inside. Because their main purpose is to capture transient atmospheric conditions, shifting light, and raw color harmonies, a pochade is characterized by its small scale and expressive, painterly shorthand rather than meticulous, studio-finished detail. Over the last 10 years I have painted over 90 pochades, with many finding homes in Prague, London, Los Angeles and across Europe.
